Why the Destination Still Matters
Was it the destination or the journey?
That question has lingered in my mind more times than I can count. What is it really about—this whole business of going somewhere, doing something, becoming someone?
There’s that old adage we hear often: “Forget the destination—the journey is the best part.” I’m paraphrasing, but we all know the line. And while it sounds poetic and wise, I think it misses something important. Because if there wasn’t a destination, why would we start the journey in the first place?
Without a destination, how would you even know where to begin? What direction to head? When to stop? What to push through and what to leave behind?
Sure, the journey has its magic. The unexpected moments, the quiet growth, the hurdles that shape you into someone different. There’s joy in the movement itself. But that joy often exists because of where we’re going. The excitement, the purpose—it all comes from knowing there’s a point to it all.
You only begin because you have somewhere to go.
The destination is what stirs you to act, to shift, to dream. It’s what helps you stay grounded when the road gets messy. It gives meaning to your struggles, and something to reflect on when they’ve passed.
You can only admire your hardships when the journey is over—when you’ve arrived and can look back and say, “Look at what I’ve gone through to get here.” The destination brings perspective. It’s where clarity forms and pride takes shape.
Or at least, that’s been my experience.
